This large 18th-century Biot jar is a fine example of the utilitarian yet elegant pottery produced in the Provençal village of Biot. Traditionally used to store liquids such as olive oil, these jars were made to be airtight and resistant, safeguarding their contents from pests and environmental conditions. The yellow-glazed rim and natural aged patina speak to its history and use over centuries.

Biot jars like this one were not only functional but also widely used for preserving perishables and transporting goods by sea. By the 18th century, Biot had become a significant center for pottery production, with 35 potteries producing over half a million jars annually. Their practical designs, often sealed with wooden or terracotta lids, made them indispensable for Mediterranean agriculture and trade.
