1930s French Still Life with Roses and Tulips - 29¼" x 38¼"

A lyrical still life in oil on panel, signed Marc Bruno a pseudonym for Marc-Henri Bruneau (1901–1942), this work is centered on three bouquets of roses and tulips arranged diagonally across the composition, adding a sense of movement to the scene. The central bouquet, fuller and more exuberant, opens outward like a small firework, while the two flanking arrangements create a rhythmic balance on either side. Several small books and a red eyeglasses case rest nearby, grounding the floral display within an intimate domestic setting before a carved wooden sideboard. The palette moves from coral and blush to crisp white, sage green, and warm tobacco brown, enhancing the sense of quiet domestic warmth while capturing the play of light in the reflections of the glass vessels and the polished wooden sideboard.

Likely dating to the 1930s, the painting is presented in a painted cream wooden frame. The painted surface is in good condition, with a few minor superficial scratches, fresh color, and confident brushwork, while the vintage frame shows gently timeworn edges with minor scuffs consistent with age. The artist is represented in several French public collections, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Angers.
