An exceptionally unusual Postmodern slip-cast ceramic vessel dating to approximately the 1980s, combining architectural form with expressive hand-applied decoration.
The tall rectangular body stands on four moulded spool-like feet and is articulated with projecting ledges, stepped sections and a large circular opening to the top. The unconventional construction gives the piece an almost architectural quality, sitting somewhere between a functional vessel and a piece of ceramic sculpture.
Its surface is particularly striking, with layered tones of ochre, olive green, muted blue, cream and black, overlaid with freely worked linear and scrolling decoration. Repeated curls, borders and abstract motifs wrap around the different planes of the vessel, giving each side its own character.
The use of slip-casting, assembled moulded elements, strong colour and highly graphic surface decoration places the piece within the experimental Postmodern ceramic design language of the late 1970s and 1980s.
The vessel is unsigned and currently unattributed. Its form and construction show affinities with the British New Ceramics movement of the period, although no maker attribution is presently being made.
A highly decorative and sculptural object with considerable presence despite its relatively compact scale.
