A large and highly decorative 19th-century Italianate urn, executed in the grand neoclassical taste.
The urn features a dramatically scalloped, petal-like rim above a deeply fluted and gadrooned body. Two bold scrolling acanthus handles flank the sides, while the piece rises from a shaped pedestal base enriched with leaf moulding and bead decoration. The surface retains its original distressed verdigris-green paint with generous gilt highlighting, creating a beautiful aged patina that enhances its architectural presence.
These grand urns, often referred to as “Venetian Grotto” or “Florentine” style, were extremely popular in the 19th century for both interior decoration and formal gardens. Made of composition (gesso over a wood or wire frame), they were designed to imitate carved stone or bronze while remaining relatively lightweight.
