4" Pot Alocasia Black Velvet

Scientific Name: Alocasia reginula

This alocasia can ultimately reach 2 - 3 feet high, with soft, velvety leaves 2 - 3 inches in length and width. The root system will spread outwards, generally shallow, but will grow deeper if the substrate is consistently moist. The roots can also grow in small pools of water, or near water features.

Best for These Animals:

• Small and medium sized reptiles and amphibians from tropical and temperate climate zones, especially frogs.

Bio Dude Substrates:

• The Bio Dude's Terra Firma (for temperate terrestrial environments with only occasional humidity spikes), so long as it receives periodic deep waterings.

Soil Depth:

• All soil depths. Can also be placed near or in water features.

Lighting:

• Low to medium indirect light (or low-level full-spectrum LED/UVB terrarium lighting); can tolerate high indirect light in certain circumstances.

• Avoid placing directly under intense heat lamps — leaves can scorch easily.

Humidity & Misting:

• Prefers moderate to high humidity (40% – 100%), with higher humidity levels suggested for optimal growth.  It can tolerate less than 40% in certain circumstances where it still receives regular waterings of the root system.  It can also be semi-aquatic or partially submerged.
  

• Ensure good air circulation to prevent mold.

Temperature Tolerance & Placement in the Terrarium:

• Ideal range: 70–80°F (21.1–27°C), but can take between 60 and 85 degrees.

• Avoid prolonged exposure below 60°F (15°C).

• Best used as a background (tall) planting, as a corner placement, or in or near water features.
  

Edible & Side Effects if Ingested:

• Alocasia plants contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals.

• Ingestion is not recommended and may cause oral or digestive irritation, though animals don't typically ingest them.
