The genus Adromischus belongs to the Crassulaceae family and includes around 30 species of small succulents native to southern Africa. ‘Coral Red’ is a cultivated selection of Adromischus marianae, chosen for its distinctive heavily textured leaves and vibrant red colouring when grown in bright conditions.

Origin
Derived from Adromischus marianae, which is native to the arid rocky landscapes of Namibia and South Africa, where it grows amongst quartz and granite outcrops in exceptionally free-draining soils.

Light
Thrives in bright light and enjoys several hours of direct sun each day. A south- or west-facing windowsill is ideal. Brighter conditions encourage stronger coral-red colouring and compact growth, while lower light may result in greener leaves.

Water
Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings before watering thoroughly. Always allow excess water to drain away, as this plant is highly susceptible to root rot if kept wet. Water sparingly during autumn and winter.

Humidity
Prefers low humidity and dry indoor conditions. It does not require misting and benefits from good airflow.

Soil
Plant in a gritty, free-draining cactus or succulent compost, ideally with added pumice, grit or perlite to improve drainage. Terracotta pots work particularly well by allowing the compost to dry more quickly.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer using a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Temp
Prefers temperatures between 15–30°C. Protect from frost and avoid temperatures below 10°C for extended periods.

Pet-safe
No. While Adromischus species are not considered highly toxic, they are not regarded as pet-safe and should be kept out of reach of pets and young children.

Sprouts Top Tips
The more sunshine this plant receives, the richer its coral-red colouring will become. If the leaves begin to wrinkle, it’s usually ready for a drink, but always let the compost dry completely before watering again. When in doubt, underwater rather than overwater.

The name Adromischus comes from the Greek words adros meaning “thick” and mischos meaning “stem”, referring to the plant’s chunky stems and fleshy leaves. In the wild, Adromischus marianae is so well camouflaged amongst surrounding rocks that it can be surprisingly difficult to spot.
