Aeschynanthus parvifolius - Lipstick Plant - Welsh Grown

A more delicate take on the classic Lipstick Plant, Aeschynanthus parvifolius features slender, trailing stems lined with small, glossy green leaves. In the right conditions, it produces vibrant red tubular flowers that peek out from dark buds – a striking contrast to its fine foliage. Ideal for shelves, hanging pots, or cascading over the edge of plant stands, it’s a graceful option for a lighter, more minimalist look.

Scientific Name
Aeschynanthus parvifolius (from Greek aischynē, “shame”, and anthos, “flower”; Latin parvifolius means “small-leaved”)

Part of the Aeschynanthus genus in the Gesneriaceae family, native to Southeast Asia. The species name parvifolius refers to its fine, narrow leaves. It is less common in cultivation than other lipstick plants but increasingly sought after by collectors for its elegant form.

Light
Bright, indirect light is best. Can tolerate gentle morning sun, but protect from strong midday rays. Low light may reduce flowering and cause leggy growth.

Water
Water when the top 2–3cm of soil is dry. Likes consistent moisture during the growing season but dislikes sitting in water. Water less frequently in winter and always use room-temperature water.

Humidity
Enjoys moderate to high humidity. Mist occasionally or place near a pebble tray or humidifier, especially in dry homes or heated rooms.

Soil
Use a very well-draining, airy mix – combine houseplant compost with orchid bark and perlite. As an epiphyte, it appreciates good airflow around the roots. Repot every 1–2 years in spring.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted high-potassium fertiliser to support flowering. Do not feed in winter.

Temp
Thrives in 18–26°C. Keep away from cold draughts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.
