Heat and cold-hardy plants are best in full sun, these tough native herbaceous perennials thrive in all sorts of soil types. With a wide range of soil preferences, from alkaline to acidic, fertile to poor, or occasionally soggy to dry! They do best of course in average, well-drained soil with moderate, yet consistent moisture. Drought tolerant, protect your investment by providing supplemental watering during times of need. Water your container plants more frequently and be sure your pots have good drainage. For best results and the most blooms, supply supplemental moisture during drought and a 3-4 inch layer of mulch over the entire root system.

Deadhead spent flowers to keep the blooms returning until frost, then you can leave the seed heads alone for winter interest and for the songbirds to feast on. While disease-resistant and resistant to Septoria leaf spot, be sure to prune away the dead leaves in late autumn to remove any potential fungal issues. Divide clumps every 3-5 years to keep the mounds growing vigorously.
