Antique Copper Vineyard Sprinkling Can From The Rhône Region - 16¼"

Crafted from solid, thick copper, this winegrower’s watering can of Rhône Valley type dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. The cylindrical body rises to a slightly shouldered neck beneath a half-cover, its edge lifted in a gentle upturned lip, set with a long tubular spout braced to the neck and a broad strap handle. Hand-soldered seams and applied fittings show attractive, raised solder beads, the surface presenting warm russet to chocolate copper with streaks of blue-green verdigris. Thick and weighty, it retains a robust, handmade character. In good, timeworn condition, it remains watertight with age marks, dents that enhance its tactile presence, and the expected surface wear, with no perforations.

Made for vineyard work, this piece was used to carry and apply treatments to the vines. Local coppersmiths in the Rhône region favored sturdy, upright forms with extended spouts for reach and controlled flow, while copper resisted mineral solutions and could be easily repaired with solder. It reflects the practical ingenuity and purpose-driven design of rural agricultural tools before mechanized sprayers became widespread in the early twentieth century.

Today it reads as a sculptural accent with authentic patina, well suited to a wine cellar or tasting room, a kitchen with country character, or a garden room. Placed on a console or garden-room shelf, it introduces texture and history, or can be used to hold dried olive branches or reed grasses.
