Compact Dark-Green Foliage with a Dense, Bushy Habit

Asparagus densiflorus 'Mazeppa', commonly known as the Mazeppa Fern or Emerald Fern, is an attractive evergreen perennial belonging to the Asparagaceae family and native to Southern Africa. Unlike the more commonly grown 'Sprengeri', which develops long cascading stems, 'Mazeppa' is distinguished by its compact, bushy and densely matted growth habit. This makes it particularly well suited to containers, borders and spaces where a more compact foliage plant is preferred.

The plant develops dense, dark-green, needle-like foliage on relatively short, arching stems, creating a neat and lush appearance. It generally grows to around 30–50 cm in height and spread, forming a compact mound rather than the long trailing form associated with 'Sprengeri'. Small, fragrant white flowers may appear among the foliage, followed by small red berries, adding seasonal interest to the plant.

Environment

Sunlight: Grows well in full sun to partial shade. Bright light encourages denser and more compact growth, while some shade can help maintain healthy green foliage in very hot conditions.

Watering: Water regularly during active growth, allowing excess water to drain freely. The plant is reasonably adaptable once established but performs best with moderate and consistent moisture.

Soil: Prefers fertile soil enriched with organic matter and good drainage. Avoid prolonged waterlogging around the roots.

Fertilizer: Feed periodically during active growth with a balanced fertilizer to encourage dense, healthy foliage.
