Glossy Sickle-Shaped Foliage with Fragrant White Flowers

Asparagus falcatus, commonly known as Sicklethorn, is a fast-growing evergreen climbing shrub belonging to the Asparagaceae family and native to Africa and parts of Asia. It is valued for its glossy, dark-green, sickle-shaped foliage and vigorous climbing habit. Unlike the compact and fine-textured ornamental asparagus ferns, this species develops strong climbing stems and can create dense vertical greenery when provided with suitable support.

The plant can grow up to approximately 7 m in height under suitable conditions and develops attractive branching stems covered with distinctive curved foliage. Fragrant white flowers appear from approximately September to December, followed by bright red berries that add further ornamental interest. Its combination of lush foliage, fragrant flowers and colourful berries makes it an attractive choice for trellises, large containers and garden spaces where vertical coverage is desired.

Environment

Sunlight: Grows well in shade to partial sunlight. Bright filtered light or gentle morning sunlight supports healthy growth, while protection from harsh afternoon sun is beneficial in hot climates.

Watering: Water regularly during active growth and keep the soil moderately moist. Allow excess water to drain freely and avoid prolonged waterlogging.
