The Austral Gem Fern is a hybrid between two Australian relatives of the Bird's Nest Fern, and it shows in the foliage: thick, glossy, dark green fronds that divide into small, feathery segments, forming a tidy clump about 20 inches tall and 24 inches wide. A waxy coating on the leaves helps it shrug off drier indoor air better than most ferns, and because it is a sterile hybrid it never produces spores, so there is none of the fine spore dust that some ferns leave on nearby surfaces.
Give it bright, indirect light such as an east facing window, keep the soil evenly moist without letting it sit wet, and it will settle in as a low fuss houseplant.
