A curved log with its bark still on, standing on a slice of its own stump, reaching over a bed and hanging a deep bell shade right above the pillows. Nothing about this lamp pretends to be anything other than a piece of tree that someone shaped into a light source.
The stem keeps its bark. Every ridge, fissure, and rough patch that formed while the tree was growing stays visible and touchable on the outer surface. The bark wraps the full length of the curve, from the base where it meets the stump slice all the way up and over the arc to where the shade attaches. Where the bark has natural gaps or where the wood was cut to attach hardware, the lighter heartwood underneath shows through, creating a two-tone contrast that runs the length of the piece without any applied stain or paint.
The curve itself comes from selecting logs that already grew with a natural bend. The workshop looks for trees that curved around obstacles or toward light during their growth, then works with that existing shape rather than forcing a straight piece into an arc. Each lamp curves differently because each tree curved differently. The radius, the high point, and the angle where the shade hangs all vary from piece to piece.
The shade is a deep bell, noticeably deeper than a flat parasol. It encloses the light source on the sides as well as from above, which focuses the downward throw into a tighter pool than a shallow shade would produce. Under the bell, wood slats radiate from a center ring like gills, spaced with gaps that let light pass through in a radial pattern. The pattern projects onto the bed below as a warm starburst that tightens and intensifies as you dim the LED and the contrast between lit gaps and dark slats sharpens.
The base is a cross-section cut from the same log species as the stem. Bark rings the outer edge. Growth rings radiate across the top surface. The slice is thick enough to provide counterweight for the full horizontal reach of the arc and heavy enough to keep the lamp stable without wall mounting or floor anchoring. Set it beside the bed, and it sits there on its own weight.
The bark surface requires treatment to stay attached over time. Our workshop stabilizes the bark with penetrating resin that locks the outer layer to the sapwood beneath without changing the texture or color. You can run your hand along the stem and feel the same ridges and roughness as untreated bark, but nothing flakes or separates with normal household contact.
The dimmable LED sits inside the bell shade. A touch switch near the base cord controls brightness. Full power gives clear reading light through the gill slats. Low settings turn the underside of the bell into a soft amber display that works as a night light without overwhelming a dark bedroom.
