Yellow Bell-Shaped Flowers with Distinctive Butterfly-Like Leaves

Bauhinia tomentosa L., commonly known as Yellow Bauhinia, Yellow Bell Orchid or Kachnar, is an attractive multi-stemmed shrub or small tree belonging to the Fabaceae family. The species is native to parts of tropical and southern Africa and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula and is also widely cultivated in India. It is valued for its distinctive two-lobed leaves and pendulous, bell-shaped yellow flowers with contrasting dark maroon markings.

The plant develops a branching, often spreading habit and can reach approximately 4–8 metres in height under suitable conditions. Its light green leaves are divided into two rounded lobes, giving them a characteristic butterfly-wing appearance. The large yellow flowers are the main ornamental feature, with five broad petals and a prominent dark maroon to brown patch near the base of the upper petal. The flowers can appear through much of the year, with flowering varying according to local climate and growing conditions.

Environment

Sunlight: Grows well in full sun to partial shade. Bright sunlight encourages healthy growth and flowering, while some protection from harsh afternoon sun can be beneficial for younger plants in hot Indian conditions.

Watering: Water regularly during active growth, particularly while the plant is establishing and during hot or dry periods. Allow excess water to drain freely and avoid keeping the soil continuously waterlogged.

Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil with good moisture retention. Loamy soil enriched with organic matter provides suitable conditions for healthy root development and growth.

Fertilizer: Feed periodically during active growth with a balanced fertilizer. An annual addition of well-decomposed organic matter can also support healthy growth and flowering.
