Bulbine is a genus of plants in the family Xanthorrhoeaceae, subfamily Asphodeloideae, named for the bulb-shaped tuber shown by many of the species. Bulbine is found chiefly in Southern Africa, with few species extending into tropical Africa and a few species in Australia. Bulbine is characterised by having flowers borne in lax or compound racemes, and by being succulent. The flowers are mostly yellow, with bearded stamens, although sometimes white, orange or pink. Bulbine succulenta is a rare species that grows on gravelly clay flats from Namaqualand to the western Karoo. It grows to 60 cm high from a lobed tuber that is covered by a hard casing that forms a thick fibrous collar around the base. This species has succulent leaves with blunt tips and a cylindrical raceme of yellow flowers. It flowers winter into early spring. USDA Zone - 9 Season to sow - Spring |
