Beautyberries are grown primarily for the showy, bright lavender fruit that appears in autumn, but Callicarpa Pearl Glam® provides 3 seasons of interest, offering rich, dark purple foliage from spring to fall. These shrubs maintain an erect habit, which means they require a bit less elbow room than their cousins. Use them to add compelling contrast to mixed borders and landscapes over an extended season while attracting songbirds in fall. Callicarpa is a genus of about 140 species of shrubs grown primarily for their shiny purple berries rather than for foliage or flowers, and the best of them are very attractive plants that can bring a distinctive look to late summer. Plants thrive in full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil, and they tolerate drought. Some species are self-pollinating, but most fruit more heavily if several are planted together.
