Canna Durban is a spectacular tender perennial from the Cannaceae family, admired for its bold foliage and vivid tropical flowers. Its broad, spirally arranged leaves display an unusual combination of green, yellow, red, and pink striping, creating an eye-catching foliage display even when the plant is not in bloom. Warm conditions, generous sunlight, and consistently moist soil encourage vigorous growth and a strong summer performance.

The vibrant foliage of Canna Durban is beautifully complemented by its bright orange flowers, which rise above the colourful leaves to create a dramatic tropical display. Flowering extends from June to October in the plains and from July to November in hilly regions. The rhizomes can be planted during February to April or March to May to establish plants for the warm growing season. Its combination of richly striped foliage and brilliant flowers makes it particularly attractive for borders, large containers, poolside planting, and tropical-style landscapes.

Environment

Sunlight: Requires full sun for the best foliage colour and flowering. Choose a bright, open position where the plant receives several hours of direct sunlight each day.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during active growth. Water thoroughly after planting and continue regular watering once new shoots emerge, while ensuring that excess water can drain freely.

Soil: Prefers fertile, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage and a pH of around 6.0–6.5. Incorporate compost or well-decomposed organic matter before planting to support healthy rhizome development.

Fertilizer: Apply a slow-release fertilizer at planting and feed again during the growing season. Organic options such as fish emulsion can also be used to support vigorous foliage and flowering.
