Collection of 11 handmade garden label spikes

Eleven handmade iron labels from the gardens of Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells's farmhouse and cooking school in Vaison-la-Romaine, where the potager, flower beds and herb planters in the courtyard have long been central to Patricia's cooking and teaching life.

Each label is made from iron, hand-lettered in white and welded onto a slender rod designed to be pressed into soil or a pot. The labels vary pleasingly in shape — most are rectangular, while two are oval — and the iron has developed a warm, uneven rust patina from years of outdoor use. The handwriting is fluid and confident, naming each herb in both French and English: Persil and Parsley, Basilic Rouge and Red Basil, Basilic Thaï and Thai Basil, Ciboulette and Chive, Basilic de Marseille and Marseille Basil, Basilic and Basil, Citronelle and Lemongrass, Thym and Thyme, Origan and Oregano, Fenouil and Fennel, and Marjolaine and Wild Marjoram.

Made by the gardeners who help Patricia and Walter tend Chanteduc, these labels carry genuine provenance and a sense of place. Grouped together in a terracotta pot of herbs on a kitchen windowsill, or arranged in a kitchen garden, they bring both practical clarity and the particular character of a working Provençal garden into any home.
