Colossal Chestnut Tree

Colossal Chestnut is named for a harvest designed to impress. Its medium-to-large nuts develop beneath protective burs and drop readily at maturity, revealing soft shells that are easier to work with than many traditional chestnuts. Once roasted, the kernels become sweet, tender, and satisfying, with the warm flavor that makes chestnuts such a distinctive autumn food. They can also be boiled, pureed, added to soups and stuffing, or ground for baking.

The vigorous tree develops into a large, spreading, long-lived specimen, bringing shade and strong landscape presence along with its crop. Thought to combine Asian and European chestnut heritage, Colossal has become popular for reliable production and excellent nut quality. For gardeners with room for a pair of chestnuts, it offers the pleasure of a seasonal harvest rarely found fresh in ordinary stores and the beauty of a substantial edible shade tree.

Plant in full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soil with generous room for the spreading canopy. Chestnuts do not tolerate persistently wet or strongly alkaline sites. Build a balanced scaffold structure while young and plan for mature size when choosing the location.
