February Birthstone Bracelet - Amethyst

There's a Greek myth behind the color: Dionysus, god of wine, pursued a maiden named Amethyste, who prayed to be spared and was turned to white quartz for her protection. In some versions of the story, Dionysus poured wine over the stone in grief or tribute, and the crystal has carried that deep purple ever since. Whatever the real geological cause (it's iron, plus natural irradiation), the wine connection stuck — and ironically curdled into the opposite meaning: rather than a stone of indulgence, amethyst became a stone of restraint.

GIA's own history of the stone puts it directly — amethyst was worn because people believed it kept the wearer "clear-headed and quick-witted in battle and in business affairs," and that it protected against drunkenness specifically. That's calm and clarity from the same root belief: a level head, on purpose, even under pressure. The intuition side comes from a different tradition entirely — amethyst has adorned bishops' rings and royal coronation regalia for centuries, worn less for status than for the quiet, reflective judgment it was thought to bring to the people wearing it.

One more thing worth knowing: amethyst is quartz, the same mineral as the citrine bracelet we wrote for November — different color, same stone family, just shaped by different conditions underground.
