Fico Secco Piacentino Fig

Fico Secco Piacentino is a fig with a history that leads all over the map. Its name suggests that this fig is from Piacenza, a capital city in Northern Italy. However, it is also known as part of Paolo Belloni’s collection at the Pomona Gardens botanical conservatory in the Valle d’Itria in southern Italy. From there, Fico Secco Piacentino made its way into the hands of the well known Italian-American fig grower, Mario DiNatale. This variety is also thought to have been sold under the name “Fico Greco.” Other synonyms may include Moro di Caneva or Moro de Caneva. Ultimately this fig has found a place in the collections of some of the most highly regarded Italian fig growers out there.

The figs have purple skin and red and amber pulp. Fico Secco Piacentino figs are usually medium sized and the skin may have some crackling. This variety grows on trees with 5-lobed leaves. The leaves are pretty, and have long fingers with smooth edges. The long shape of these figs gives them a greater ability to shed water and resist splitting. The long necks have good attachment to the tree and reduced dropping. The figs can even dry on the tree, as the name translates to “dried fig from Piacenza.”

When do we ship cuttings?

Non-Rooted Cuttings(November/December):

We begin to ship cuttings once the trees are dormant and in a shippable state. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March.

**All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout. Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October/November) will ship out first in November/December. If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refrigerator until you are ready to root them. They will be perfectly fine. That is what we do and they've turned into our most impressive trees.

Rooted Cuttings(Spring):

We begin shipping rooted cuttings once they are mature enough to ship. The shipping period typically begins late April and continues into June. Regardless of the date you select during checkout, we will ship when ready during that span. Please do not ask for ETA's or specific arrival dates. You will receive an email when your order ships with UPS Ground tracking details.
