This whimsical stoneware tureen by Provençal contemporary ceramicist Julie Désert Armanville takes the form of a matronly domestic figure with exaggerated, rounded proportions. Dressed in a deep olive-green gown with a glossy glaze, she wears a white ruffled collar and scalloped apron, while holding a leek in one hand and a dish towel in the other, playful references to the rituals of the French kitchen. The upper body forms a removable lid that lifts from the skirt-shaped base. Warm flesh-toned glazes animate the face and arms, whose deliberately naïve modeling lends the piece its distinctive personality. Stamped JDA to the underside. Very good condition, with glaze variations and shape irregularities inherent to the artist's process. Contemporary ceramicist Julie Désert Armanville draws upon the artistic legacy of Vallauris, where expressive figuration and inventive ceramics flourished in the postwar years. Having worked in the atelier of celebrated designer and ceramicist Roger Capron from 1972 to 1982, she developed a distinctive visual language characterized by tactile surfaces, simplified forms, and gentle humor. Ideal for storing small kitchen essentials such as garlic cloves, tea bags, or sugar cubes, the tureen doubles as a charming sculptural accent.
