Pisum sativum subsp. arvense Frostmaster winter peas are a cool-season annual legume used for cover cropping, forage mixtures, green manure, and soil-building rotations. The white-flowered plants have light green to tan seed and lower tannin levels than many field peas, contributing to good forage palatability. Their growth habit and field use are similar to Austrian winter peas, with dependable cold tolerance after seedlings are established.
Plant in early to mid-fall in most regions so plants develop several true leaves before hard freezes. Spring sowing is also possible where the season remains cool long enough for useful growth. Frostmaster peas tolerate heavier soils but still require drainage; avoid planting so late that seedlings enter winter with little growth. Incorporate or mow before mature seed forms when using the crop as green manure.
