Gardenia jasminoides – Cape Jasmine

Renowned for its glossy evergreen foliage and exquisitely fragrant white blooms, Gardenia jasminoides is one of the most elegant flowering plants you can grow. The beautifully scented flowers, often likened to jasmine, appear from late spring through summer, creating a stunning display that brings a touch of the tropics to your home, conservatory or sheltered patio.

The genus Gardenia honours Scottish-American botanist Dr Alexander Garden, while jasminoides means “resembling jasmine”, referring to its wonderfully fragrant flowers.

Origin
Native to China, Taiwan, Japan and parts of Southeast Asia, where it grows in warm, humid woodland environments.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun. Outdoors, choose a sheltered position with morning sunshine and afternoon shade. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the leaves and flowers.

Water
Keep the compost consistently lightly moist, allowing only the top 1–2 cm to dry before watering again. Never allow the compost to become completely dry or waterlogged. Gardenias prefer rainwater where possible, as hard tap water can gradually increase soil alkalinity.

Humidity
Thrives in high humidity. Indoors, placing the pot on a pebble tray or using a humidifier can help encourage healthy foliage and better flowering.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 16–24°C. Avoid sudden temperature changes and protect from temperatures below 10°C.

Soil
Plant in a moisture-retentive, free-draining ericaceous compost. Gardenias prefer acidic soil, which helps prevent nutrient deficiencies and keeps the foliage a healthy deep green.

Feeding
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a fertiliser formulated for ericaceous (acid-loving) plants. Stop feeding during autumn and winter.

Growth Habit
A slow-growing, bushy evergreen shrub that typically reaches 60–120 cm when grown in containers. Mature plants produce an abundance of creamy-white, rose-like flowers with an intense, sweet fragrance.

Toxicity
Mildly toxic if eaten by pets and humans and may cause stomach upset if ingested.
