The dark, near-ebonized ground carries a lush still life of garden roses and companion blooms in blush, apricot, cream, and soft green, framed by a fine gilt line to the rim. Made of tôle, tin-plated sheet iron painted and varnished to create a durable, lacquer-like surface. French, circa late 19th century Tôle peinte reached a refined peak under the Second Empire, when deep grounds, gilt accents, and abundant florals suited the opulent Napoléon III taste.
