Heliconia bihai is a spectacular tropical perennial grown from rhizomes and valued for its bold, upright growth and exotic inflorescences. Belonging to the Heliconiaceae family and native to tropical regions of the Americas, it develops large, lush green leaves that create a striking backdrop for its colourful blooms. Warm temperatures, humidity, and consistently moist soil encourage vigorous growth, making it particularly well suited to tropical and subtropical gardens.

The plant produces distinctive upright flower clusters surrounded by vivid red to orange-red bracts with contrasting dark green tips, giving each inflorescence the characteristic sculptural appearance of a tropical Heliconia. Growing to approximately 1.5–3 m in height with a spread of about 1–1.5 m, Heliconia bihai makes an impressive architectural feature in garden beds and large containers. Its dramatic foliage and long-lasting inflorescences bring a lush, resort-like character to tropical landscapes, while the flowers can also be used in striking floral arrangements.

Environment

Sunlight: Grows well in full sun to partial shade. Bright light encourages stronger growth and more impressive flowering, while some afternoon shade can be beneficial in very hot locations.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist during active growth, particularly in warm weather. Do not allow the planting medium to remain stagnant or waterlogged.

Soil: Prefers rich, fertile, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage. Incorporating compost or well-decomposed organic matter helps support vigorous rhizome and foliage development.

Fertilizer: Feed regularly during active growth with a balanced fertilizer supplemented with organic matter to encourage lush foliage and strong flowering stems.
