Hoya surigaoensis EG 00897

With its large, glossy foliage and vigorous climbing habit, Hoya surigaoensis EG 00897 is an impressive species that deserves a place in any Hoya collection. Its thick, deep green leaves are beautifully veined and can develop rich reddish tones when grown in brighter conditions, adding even more interest to this already striking plant. As it matures, long trailing vines can be left to cascade from a hanging pot or trained to climb a trellis or moss pole. Mature plants produce clusters of waxy, star-shaped yellow-green flowers with a creamy centre, releasing a wonderfully sweet, coconut-like fragrance.

Origin
Native to the Surigao region of Mindanao, Philippines, where it grows as an epiphyte in warm, tropical forests. EG 00897 is a collector’s accession number used to identify this particular collection within the horticultural trade.  

Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light and benefits from a little gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Brighter conditions can encourage attractive reddish colouring in the leaves, but avoid prolonged harsh midday sun.

Water
Allow the top third of the potting mix to dry before watering thoroughly. Always use a free-draining mix and never allow the plant to sit in water. Reduce watering during autumn and winter.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity but adapts well to average household conditions. Higher humidity will encourage stronger growth and improve the chances of flowering.

Soil
Grow in a chunky, free-draining houseplant mix containing bark, perlite and peat-free compost or coco coir. Excellent drainage and airflow around the roots are essential.

Food
Feed every three to four weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Once established, a fertiliser slightly higher in potassium can help encourage flowering.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–28°C and should be protected from temperatures below 15°C.

Pet-safe
Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, chewing any houseplant may cause mild stomach upset in some pets.

Hoya surigaoensis is a fast-growing species once established, so don’t be afraid to give it a hoop, trellis or moss pole to climb. Plenty of bright, indirect light will bring out the beautiful veining and may encourage reddish leaf colouring. Avoid overwatering, and never remove old flower spurs after blooming, as Hoyas often flower from the same spurs year after year.
