Impatiens parasitica - Welsh Grown

A fascinating and rarely seen species, Impatiens parasitica is grown for its unusual growth habit and elegant, orchid-like flowers. Despite its name, it is not actually parasitic. Instead, it is an epiphytic or lithophytic species, naturally growing on moss-covered tree trunks and rocks in humid forests. Its slender stems, glossy foliage and delicate yellow flowers make it a unique addition for collectors of unusual tropical plants.

Impatiens parasitica

The species was first described in the 19th century and belongs to the Balsaminaceae family. The species name parasitica refers to its habit of growing upon other plants, rather than feeding from them.

Origin
Native to the humid forests of the Eastern Himalayas, including parts of India, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar, where it grows on mossy trees, rocks and shaded banks.

Light
Prefers bright, filtered light or partial shade. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate foliage. It performs best in conditions that mimic a tropical forest understory.

Water
Keep the growing medium consistently lightly moist but never waterlogged. Allow only the surface of the compost to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering slightly during cooler months but never allow the plant to dry out completely.

Humidity
Thrives in high humidity (60%+). A terrarium, greenhouse cabinet or naturally humid room is ideal. Good air circulation helps prevent fungal problems.

Soil
Requires a very open, airy mix with excellent drainage. A blend of houseplant compost, orchid bark, perlite and sphagnum moss works well. As an epiphytic species, it dislikes heavy or compacted soils.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during active growth with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Avoid overfeeding, as this species naturally grows in nutrient-poor environments.

Temp
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Protect from temperatures below 12°C and avoid sudden drops in temperature or cold draughts.

Pet-safe
There are no confirmed reports of Impatiens parasitica being toxic to cats or dogs. However, as it has not been extensively studied, we recommend keeping it out of reach of pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
This species thrives when treated more like an orchid than a typical houseplant. High humidity, excellent drainage and consistently moist—but never soggy—conditions are the keys to success. Avoid letting water sit around the crown.

Extras
Can be propagated from stem cuttings during the growing season. Rooting is generally quickest in warm, humid conditions using moist sphagnum moss or a light propagation mix.

Despite its name, Impatiens parasitica doesn’t steal nutrients from other plants. It simply uses tree trunks and rocks as a place to grow, allowing it to access the humid, shaded conditions it loves without competing for space on the forest floor.
