Most gemstone names come from color, place, or myth. Garnet's comes from produce — Latin granatum, the pomegranate, because someone looking at a handful of raw garnet crystals centuries ago thought immediately of the fruit's clustered red seeds. It's a strangely down-to-earth origin for a stone that pharaohs were buried with and Roman signet rings were carved from to seal official documents.

That everyday practicality carries through the folklore, too. Garnet earned a reputation as the traveler's stone — carried specifically to guard against misfortune while far from home, and according to long-standing legend, even set into Noah's lantern to light the ark through the dark. That's protection with a job to do, not protection as an abstract idea: a stone people actually relied on to get somewhere safely.

Strength and stability show up less as separate myths and more as what the stone itself represents by nature — technically, "garnet" isn't one mineral but a family of six closely related ones (almandine, pyrope, grossular, spessartine, andradite, uvarovite), spanning red through green, orange, and even blue. Different compositions, same underlying toughness, which is probably why it's stayed a favorite from Bronze Age Egypt through Victorian mourning jewelry to now — a stone people kept coming back to, generation after generation, rather than one that had a single moment and faded.
