Kalanchoe humilis - Tiger Striped Succulent

Kalanchoe humilis, commonly known as the Tiger Striped Succulent, is an eye-catching succulent with fleshy, pale green leaves dramatically marked with purple to burgundy stripes and splashes. Its unusual colouring and compact growth make it a fantastic addition to a sunny windowsill or succulent collection.

Origin
Native to eastern and southeastern Africa, where it grows in warm, dry and rocky environments.

Light
Prefers plenty of bright light and will appreciate several hours of direct sunlight. A bright windowsill is ideal. Good light also helps maintain the distinctive dark markings on the leaves, although protect from sudden exposure to intense midday sun if the plant has previously been grown in lower light.

Water
Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings, then water deeply and allow all excess water to drain away. Water considerably less during autumn and winter. Avoid leaving the plant sitting in water, as this can quickly lead to root rot.

Humidity
Average household humidity is ideal. This succulent prefers drier conditions and does not require additional humidity or misting.

Soil
Requires a very well-draining soil mix. Use a cactus and succulent compost with additional perlite, pumice or grit to improve drainage. Always use a pot with adequate drainage.

Food
Feed every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer with a cactus and succulent fertiliser diluted to half strength. Little to no feeding is required during autumn and winter.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 15–27°C. Protect from frost, cold draughts and prolonged exposure to temperatures below 10°C.

No. Kalanchoes are toxic if ingested and should be kept out of reach of pets and children.

Give your Tiger Striped Succulent plenty of bright light to bring out its beautiful purple and burgundy markings. If new growth becomes stretched or loses its distinctive colouring, it may be a sign that the plant needs a brighter position.

Extras
Kalanchoe humilis has a naturally compact, branching habit and can develop increasingly dramatic colouring when grown in good light. Mature plants may also produce tall flower stems carrying clusters of small flowers.
