Large 18th-Century Biot Jar w/ Rich Weathered Patina & Stamped Rim - 44"

A rare, tall 18th-century Biot jar, embodying the monumental simplicity and quiet strength for which these Provençal vessels are so admired. Traditionally produced in the village of Biot near Antibes on the French Riviera, jars of this scale were once used for the storage and transport of olive oil and other provisions, their generous proportions allowing them to remain cool even in the Mediterranean heat.

The jar displays the classic ovoid silhouette associated with early Biot pottery, rising to a thick rolled rim coated in a warm honey-toned glaze that extends into the interior. Around the neck, traces of stamped decoration remain visible beneath the glaze, subtly animating the surface and bearing witness to the handmade nature of the piece. The unglazed terracotta body below has acquired an extraordinary patina over centuries, with darkened areas, mineral deposits, lichen-like markings, and weathered tonal variations creating a surface of remarkable depth and texture. Unlike the more luminous examples, this jar possesses a moodier, almost mineral presence, with charcoal and stone-coloured areas contrasting beautifully against the softer cream and ochre tones of the glaze. Small glaze drips and firing irregularities further enhance its individuality, while the sheer scale of the vessel gives it a commanding architectural presence.

The jar shows expected age-related wear, including abrasions, chips, old marks, and surface weathering consistent with centuries of use and outdoor exposure. The base has been carefully restored at some point in its history; the repair remains discreet, does not affect the structural integrity of the jar, and allows it to continue to be enjoyed with confidence.

Still unpierced and true to its original utilitarian purpose, it would require drainage holes if intended for use as an outdoor planter.
