A tall 18th-century Biot jar with the generous, softly rounded form characteristic of these Provençal storage vessels. Made from pale terracotta, the surface has developed a wonderfully layered patina in tones of stone, ochre, and gray, with traces of glaze concentrated around the thick rolled rim. A particularly beautiful green glaze run descends freely down one side, an accidental flourish that gives this example a highly individual character. Several old iron staple repairs remain visible around the upper body, evidence of its long history and of the value placed on preserving and continuing to use such vessels. Potter’s stamps are present beneath the rim but could not be identified. The jar has not been pierced and should be drilled if it is to be used outdoors or as a planter.

Biot was one of the Mediterranean’s great centers for jar production, reaching its height during the 17th and 18th centuries. Exported far beyond Provence, these large vessels were principally used for storing and transporting olive oil, as well as flour, dried vegetables, and other provisions, and remain enduring icons of Provençal culture.

Its scale, broad silhouette, and beautifully weathered surface give this jar considerable presence, whether left empty, filled with dried grasses or branches, or planted with a citrus tree once drilled. The old staple repairs, faded glaze, and singular green run give the surface a tangible sense of history that adds greatly to its appeal.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
