Large Antique Anglo-Indian Silver-Plated Box with Rich Repoussé Work - 9¾" x 14¼"

This superb 19th-century Anglo-Indian silver-plated box combines a traditional European coffer form with richly worked South Asian imagery. The rectangular body is covered almost entirely with exceptionally detailed high-relief repoussé and chased decoration, with Hindu deities emerging from dense scrolling foliage, framed by friezes of elephants and fantastical birds. The decoration extends across the lid, sides and even the underside, where a large elephant is engraved. An interlaced monogram, apparently OC, appears on the lid and is repeated on the sides, suggesting that the box was originally commissioned or personalized for a particular owner. 

The box stands on four petite lion-paw feet and is fitted with ornate scrolling side handles and a richly modeled carrying handle to the lid. Its substantial construction and dense repoussé decoration give the piece a distinctly luxurious presence. It retains its key, and the lock is functional, although it should be operated with care given the age of the mechanism. The silvered surface has worn through in places, revealing warmer tones beneath and creating attractive variation across the deeply worked panels. This is especially visible inside, where areas of wear reveal the warm coppery tones of the underlying alloy.

Anglo-Indian boxes of this quality were luxury objects made for wealthy European households in India and many were brought back to Britain as prized possessions or gifts. Today, its intricate surface and softly worn silver finish would make a distinctive accent on a library table, console or dressing table, where it could hold jewelry, letters or other keepsakes while adding richness and texture to a collected interior.
