Large French Antique Confit Pot w/ Rare Blue Glaze Run - 13¾"

A handsome large confit pot from Southwest France, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Its generous ovoid form is crowned with twin handles and finished with a glossy mustard-yellow glaze that extends over the upper half of the vessel. Particularly unusual is the dramatic inky-blue glaze run cascading down one side, creating a bold contrast with the warm, unglazed terracotta body below. Decades of use and exposure have given the surface a richly textured patina. Chips and losses around the foot, acquired over years of service, enhance the pot's authentic rustic character while remaining stable and sound for display.

Originally used for preserving meat in fat, particularly duck and goose in Southwest France, pots of this type were glazed only on the upper portion, while the lower section remained porous and could be partially buried in cool earth before refrigeration became widely available. The unusual blue glaze run, the result of kiln contact with a nearby glazed vessel, distinguishes this example and lends it a particularly striking appearance.
