Large Green-Glazed Castelnaudary Jardinière, Late 19th Century - 21¼" x 25¼"

A grand green-glazed terracotta jardinière from Castelnaudary in southwestern France, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. This impressive planter features the classic urn-shaped form with a rolled rim, four substantial loop handles, and a molded foot. The rich emerald glaze pools and varies beautifully across the surface, creating depth, luminosity, and subtle tonal variation, while the interior remains in natural buff clay. Castelnaudary workshops were renowned for producing durable glazed terracotta garden vessels, prized for their deep green finishes and robust construction. The four handles allowed these substantial planters to be moved with greater ease, while the thick, lustrous glaze provided both protection and enduring visual appeal. This example is characteristic of the region's production during a period when local potteries supplied country estates and gardens with practical yet elegant decorative wares.

The condition reflects a long life of use and careful preservation. The surface shows scattered glaze losses, abrasions, and minor chips to the rim and foot, all contributing to its authentic aged character. Areas of glaze loss have been sympathetically overpainted in complementary green tones, helping to unify the surface while preserving the jardinière’s rich decorative appeal. The resulting patina is layered, combining original glaze, exposed terracotta, and later restorative work. The base has been restored with a wooden insert, providing stability for display. Due to this restoration, we recommend using it as a cache-pot with a liner or as a vessel for dried flowers and branches rather than planting directly into it.
