Large Italian Majolica Covered Urn by Ezio Ceccarelli c. 1900 - 13" x 17"

This large Italian majolica covered compote dates to the late 19th or early 20th century and is signed on the base by the Italian sculptor Ezio Ceccarelli (1865–1927). The form follows the classical vocabulary of the urn, with a broad bowl raised on a fluted stem and square plinth, lending the piece a balanced, architectural presence. The sizeable and weighty removable cover is exuberantly sculpted as a generous harvest of lemons, grapes, figs, and woodland mushrooms nestled among broad leaves, all hand painted in vivid polychrome and finished with a softly crackled glaze that enhances the modeling. The crisp white body of the urn contrasts elegantly with the richly colored lid, while the square base is banded in blue and yellow, grounding the composition visually and physically. Substantial in scale and pleasingly weighty, the compote has a strong physical presence. It remains in good condition, with age-related craquelure throughout, a small chip to one corner of the base, and minor nicks to a few high points of the sculpted decoration, all consistent with careful use and contributing to the piece’s authentic character. 

As a centerpiece on a dining table or kitchen island, it brings joyful color and a sense of abundance. The lid lifts to allow storage for biscuits, sweets, or other treats, so it is both sculptural and useful. Pair it with simple linens and clear glass to let the palette shine, or place it on a console beneath a gilt mirror for a classic note. Its lively modeling and rich glazes add warmth and a welcoming spirit to traditional and eclectic interiors alike.
