Large Napoléon III Painted and Gilt Metal Tray w/ Romantic Landscape - 30¾"

A large, richly decorated gilt and painted metal tray of shaped cartouche form, from the Napoléon III period, mid to late 19th century. The lobed rim is outlined with hand-painted gilt borders, framing a central lakeside landscape with a distant village and a fisherman. The ground is a deep black, beautifully offsetting the gilt accents of the scene and border. A small touch of orange in the fisherman’s jacket draws the eye toward this delicate figure, adding a subtle narrative focus. Condition is very good, with earlier chips having been carefully restored, creating a gently textured surface consistent with age and use.

Large decorative trays of this type were highly popular during the Second Empire, produced in painted metal or papier-mâché to combine impressive scale with a relatively lightweight structure. Their dark grounds, gilded ornament, and romantic scenes reflect the period’s taste for rich yet versatile decoration, influenced by both French and English traditions.
