Large Southwest French Terracotta Jar w/ Moss Green Glaze - 9½"

A large late 19th-century French storage jar in glazed terracotta, its broad, slightly tapering body swelling at the shoulders before narrowing to a short, rolled rim. Twin loop handles rise crisply from the upper body just beneath the collar, giving balance to the form and easing its lift. The silhouette is sturdy yet well-proportioned, designed for everyday use while retaining a quiet elegance. The exterior is coated in a glossy green glaze that shifts in tone from moss to olive, pooling darker at the rim and handles and thinning in places to reveal warm clay beneath. From Périgord in southwest France, such jars were used for storing confits, fats, and pantry staples in cool cellars. The sturdy rim allowed a cloth or parchment cover to be tied in place, while the twin handles made lifting easier. The green derives from copper-oxide in the glaze, a hallmark of the region’s rustic pottery, while the honey-colored interior helped seal the porous clay.
