Late 19th-Century Alpine Folk Art Marriage Box - 15¼"

A charming late 19th-century marriage box from the Queyras region of the French Alps, carved from softwood, likely larch or pine, and beautifully aged to a warm chestnut-brown patina. The lid and sides are decorated with hand-carved stylized foliate motifs and rosettes, traditional symbols of Alpine folk art. The monogram "TJ" is carved on the front, while the initials "WIM" appear on the reverse, preserving traces of its personal history. 

Marriage boxes such as this were treasured household possessions, presented to newly married couples for storing important documents, keepsakes, textiles, and family heirlooms. Crafted during the long Alpine winters, they reflect the rich folk-art traditions of the Queyras, where even everyday furniture was embellished with symbolic carvings and personal touches. The interior retains traces of its original wallpaper lining, adding another layer of authenticity and charm. The iron hinges appear to be old replacements, and the box shows expected wear, scratches, and small knocks consistent with age and use. The original lock remains, although it is no longer functional.
