Late 19th Century French Cast-Iron Medici Garden Urns - 15¼"

This pair of cast-iron Medici urns, likely French and dating to the late 19th century, are cast in the classic  campana (bell) form. Each petite to mid-scale urn features an everted, gadrooned rim, a waisted body, and a rounded collar above a turned socle resting on a square plinth base. The surfaces display a warm, oxidized iron tone with remnants of old grey paint, along with scattered pitting, light encrustation, and visible wear to the rims.

The Medici urns take inspiration from antique kraters admired during the Renaissance and revived in the 19th century. French foundries were especially skilled in producing such garden ornaments, using durable cast iron to translate antique profiles into crisp architectural accents for terraces, orangeries, and formal courtyards during the Belle Époque. Painted finishes protected the metal and were often reapplied over time, leaving the layered patina now so prized.

These urns bring sculptural weight and presence to an interior or garden. Indoors, they can flank a console in an entry hall, sit atop a mantel, or stand as a pair on a staircase landing.
