A characterful late 19th century French terracotta confit pot, traditionally used for the preparation and storage of preserved foods.
The hand-thrown vessel has a beautifully proportioned tapering body with a rolled rim and a pair of applied loop handles. Much of the exterior is covered in a rich mottled green glaze, contrasting beautifully with the naturally exposed terracotta around the lower section.
Years of use have created wonderful variation across the surface, with areas of glaze loss, rubbing and small chips revealing the warm clay beneath. Subtle throwing lines and irregularities throughout the body further emphasise its handmade, utilitarian origins.
Originally a practical household object, it now works particularly well as a decorative vessel and provides a strong sculptural element within both contemporary and traditional interiors.
Dating to approximately 1870–1900.
