This late 19th-century Limoges porcelain vase features a classical urn form, raised on a circular foot and flanked by finely modelled beaded gilt handles. The celadon ground, soft and luminous, provides a serene backdrop for the striking central relief panel. Executed in applied biscuit porcelain, the sculptural cartouche imitates the effect of an antique carved cameo. Draped classical figures and putti are rendered with crisp modelling and gentle movement, their marble-like matte finish contrasting beautifully with the smooth celadon glaze. Gilt borders and restrained geometric ornament frame the composition, adding structure and refinement while allowing the relief to remain the focal point. Signed by the Henri Ardant manufacture, this vase was crafted in Limoges, in west-central France, which by the late nineteenth century had firmly established itself as one of Europe’s leading centres of hard-paste porcelain. Benefiting from the region’s prized kaolin deposits, Limoges porcelain was distinguished by its fine grain and clarity, qualities that enabled local manufactures that allowed its manufactures to excel in both sculptural modelling and refined decoration.

Henri Ardant (1828–1883) was active during the height of the French neoclassical revival, his manufacture became known for refined neoclassical subjects rendered in biscuit porcelain. Here, the cool celadon ground sets off the matte white relief and warm gilding, creating a contrast that strengthens the decorative impact. The interplay of glaze, biscuit, and gold highlights both Limoges craftsmanship and the maison’s refined neoclassical sensibility.
