Cardinal Flower ‘Queen Victoria’ displays vivid red blooms every bit as brilliant as its avian namesake, here displayed against deep burgundy foliage and stems. Hummingbirds are attracted to spires of blooms that rise on sturdy stems above the garden from midsummer into fall. A native plant easily grown in rich soil that remains moist through the season, it thrives at water’s edge or in large containers that are attentively watered.
Lobelia is a genus of 365 species of annuals and perennials, many of them native to North America. The perennials bloom from summer to early fall and are prized by gardeners for their spires of colorful flowers, which open progressively from bottom to top. Plants thrive in full sun or partial shade (which they require in the South) and average to damp soil with a slightly acid pH.
