Lou Monti's Chincoteague Celeste Fig

Like other Celeste figs, this variety has a light purple and brown skin with some crackling. The uniform teardrop shape helps them shed water more easily and resist splitting. Chincoteagues generally grow a bit larger than other Celeste varieties, but the size usually increases with age and may not show within the first few seasons of growth. Chincoteague Celeste figs have brownish red pulp with a sweet berry flavor. The trees grow 3- and 5-lobed leaves and have a dense leaf pattern. While there are many Celestes out there, Monti backs this one as high quality and reliable for backyard fig enthusiasts.

Fig collector, Lou Monti, scoured this fertile area for fig trees and has sampled and trialed the island’s unique varieties for over 40 years. Monti signed his name to this strain of Celeste because of its superior qualities and staying power for over 44 years in his care. The mother tree, owned by Monti, is large and a vigorous grower. The Chincoteague figs are hardy and have good resistance to splitting. They are early ripening and can withstand humidity, making Chincoteague Celeste an ideal candidate for the Mid-Atlantic or Northeastern grower. The figs’ closed eyes also give them good resistance to pests. In fact, Monti called Chincoteague Celeste the “best backyard fig for northern growers.”

When do we ship cuttings?

Non-Rooted Cuttings(November/December):

We begin to ship cuttings once the trees are dormant and in a shippable state. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March.

**All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout. Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October/November) will ship out first in November/December. If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refrigerator until you are ready to root them. They will be perfectly fine. That is what we do and they've turned into our most impressive trees.

Rooted Cuttings(Spring):

We begin shipping rooted cuttings once they are mature enough to ship. The shipping period typically begins late April and continues into June. Regardless of the date you select during checkout, we will ship when ready during that span. Please do not ask for ETA's or specific arrival dates. You will receive an email when your order ships with UPS Ground tracking details.
