The Barbados cherry is an evergreen shrub or small tree, native to the West Indies (Lesser Antilles), and extends through southern Mexico, Central America, and northern South America (as far south as Peru and Brazil).![]()
The most unique feature is its fruit. The small, bright-red, cherry-like drupes ripen quickly, sometimes as little as 3-4 weeks after flowering. They are renowned for having one of the highest natural concentrations of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in the world, often containing 20 to 50 times more than an orange! The fruit is juicy with a tart to subacid flavor, making it excellent for fresh eating, juices, jams, and supplements.![]()
The fruit is edible and non-toxic to humans and is eaten fresh or processed.

Full sun (6-8+ hours of direct light) is ideal for maximum fruit production. It tolerates partial shade, but fruiting may be reduced.![]()
Water thoroughly, allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. It is moderately drought-tolerant once established, but consistent moisture is key for good fruit yield.![]()
Prefers sandy or loamy, well-draining soil. It can tolerate clay if drainage is good. ![]()
