March Birthstone Bracelet - Aquamarine

The name is about as literal as gemstone names get: aqua marina, Latin for "water of the sea" — and the pale blue-green color earned it a real maritime reputation. Sailors kept it as a talisman against storms and seasickness, and for a long stretch of history, people genuinely believed washed-up aquamarine was mermaid treasure, spilled from a sunken chest.

GIA's own historical record puts it more plainly than most folklore does: beryl, the mineral family aquamarine belongs to, was believed to give "protection against foes in battle or litigation," making the wearer "unconquerable and amiable" while it "quickens the intellect." That's courage and truth in one sentence, more or less — a stone for holding your ground, whether the fight is physical or just someone trying to talk over you in a room. The harmony comes from the same well: a stone associated with calming literal turbulence became, over time, a stone people reached for to calm the emotional kind too.

It's worth knowing aquamarine is emerald's sibling — same beryl family, different trace elements (iron instead of chromium). But where emerald is famous for its fragile internal inclusions, aquamarine typically grows far cleaner, which is part of why it's such an easy, durable stone to wear daily.
