Emerald has been mined in Egypt since at least 1700 BCE, and by the time Cleopatra came along, she wasn't just wearing emeralds — she controlled the mines herself. The name comes from the ancient Greek smaragdus, simply meaning "green," and Pliny the Elder tried and failed to fully capture the color in words, writing that "this green color above all green is not green" — a compliment dressed up as a riddle.

That deep, living green is exactly why emerald became May's birthstone and a symbol of growth and renewal: it's spring's color, distilled into a stone. Ancient artisans even believed staring at emerald could soothe tired eyes — an early, literal version of "this color is restorative."

Its connection to love is less about romance and more about honesty in it. Legend held that an emerald placed under the tongue would let the wearer see the future, speak more persuasively, and — pointedly — expose a false lover's broken promises. Emerald is the most famous member of the beryl family, the same mineral group as aquamarine — chromium and vanadium are what turn it green instead of blue.

• At roughly 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, emerald sounds tough on paper, but nearly all natural emerald has internal inclusions (gemologists call this the "jardin," French for garden) that make it more brittle than the hardness number suggests
• Avoid sharp knocks and pressure — it can chip or fracture more easily than a "hardness 8" would imply
• Skip ultrasonic cleaners entirely (they can worsen existing inclusions); clean with a soft cloth and mild soap only
