Mid-20th Century Castelnaudary Green-Glazed Urn Planter - 13½"

This small urn-shaped planter from Castelnaudary, in the southwest of France, dates from the mid-20th century. It is wheel-thrown in robust terracotta and finished with a rich copper-green lead glaze that pools and shifts in tone from bright apple to deeper bottle shades. The classical form features an everted rolled rim, a rounded belly that flares into a molded pedestal foot, and two opposing loop handles that provide balance and symmetry. The interior remains largely unglazed, revealing the warm buff body, while the rim shows glaze runs, craquelure, and traces of natural wear. The piece is in good condition overall, with small rim chips, minor glaze losses, and age-consistent surface scuffs. Castelnaudary’s pottery workshops were renowned for producing sturdy utilitarian earthenware enlivened by vibrant green glazes.
