Generous in scale and richly ornamented, this large mid-20th-century decorative lidded jar was produced by the Léon Warin manufacture in Malicorne, and is signed under the base. It is entirely hand-painted and conceived in the spirit of Dutch and Northern European ceramics of the 17th and 18th centuries. The generously proportioned body is subtly ribbed and articulated into vertical panels, each animated with stylized flowers, scrolling foliage, and rhythmic borders, all hand-painted on a soft ivory ground with a lively, painterly touch. The domed lid is crowned with a graceful bird finial, an exotic and playful motif rooted in European chinoiserie and Delft traditions, reinforcing the jar’s historic decorative vocabulary.

The Léon Warin manufacture originated in the production of apothecary vessels, and its mark reflects this heritage: formed from the interlaced initials L and W, it is cleverly designed to resemble an apothecary scale. Used after the firm’s move to Malicorne in the mid-20th century, the mark underscores the workshop’s enduring link to pharmaceutical tradition, even in purely decorative pieces such as this.
