The miracle berry plant is a small evergreen shrub that typically grows to a height of 3-6 feet. It has glossy green leaves and small, inconspicuous flowers that give way to small red or pink berries. The plant can be grown in a variety of soils, but prefers well-draining, acidic soils. It prefers full sun, but can tolerate partial shade.

The fruit of the miracle berry plant is small, about the size of a cranberry, and has a slightly sweet taste. It is the active ingredient, miraculin, in the fruit that causes the temporary change in taste perception. Miraculin binds to the taste buds on the tongue, altering the way that sour foods are perceived by the brain. As a result, sour foods taste sweet while the effect lasts.
